NIV/TNIV Translation Work
I have been a member of the Committee on Bible Translation since 1997 and chair of the Committee since 2006. This committee (CBT) is an independent body of biblical scholars (12-15 in number) who have sole charge of the New International Version (NIV) and the Today's New International Version (TNIV) translations. The NIV was last revised in 1984 and continues to be the best-selling Bible in the English-speaking world. The TNIV was released in 2005. Originally intended as an update to the NIV, the translation found in the TNIV was released as a separate publication because of the controversy in the 1990s over CBT's decision to move toward a judicious use of inclusive language.
In August, 2009, the sponsoring organization of the NIV and TNIV, Biblica (formerly the International Bible Society), along with Zondervan Corporation, the commercial publisher in North America of the NIV and TNIV, announced that a new revision of the NIV would be released in 2011, at which time both the 1984 NIV and the TNIV would cease to be published. The translators welcome this decision and will be working very hard during the latter part of 2009 and into 2010 to revise our existing text.
My participation in CBT has been one of the high points in my ministry experience. It is immensely stimulating to spend intensive weeks with other biblical scholars discussing the meaning of the text and how best to say it in modern English. I have learned a great deal from my colleagues over the years – especially as we work through the Hebrew text of the OT!
My colleagues on the CBT, as of September, 2009, are:
